:: the meaning of life is to find your gift. the purpose of life is to give it away - p.picasso
shine bright. share your beauty, passion, strength, warmth & individuality with the world around you. it’s a chain reaction. give love, get love.
like most things in life, our health is one we tend not to pay much attention to until it’s compromised.
wait, what? don’t you do yoga every day? don’t you lead yoga classes? don’t you make green smoothies & post pictures of them incessantly to instagram and facebook? what do you mean you don’t pay attention to your health?
while, yes, i do all of the above, i’ve realized that though there are worse habits to develop, the above have become so second nature that i tend to take them for granted.
last week, i was hit rough by flu 2014. of course, this was on the coldest day of the year aka the polar vortex. even then, i figured ‘i can’t be sick. it’s just the cold!’ but when, after three hours at work with my feet literally glued to a space heater to warm my toes, i knew this chill through my bones wasn’t normal.
i don’t take medicine. i don’t go to the doctor. i did both.
with a fever of over 100 degrees, such severe aches in my lower back and through my legs it was a nightmare trying to find a comfortable position in which to lay let alone stand - i came face to face with one of my biggest fears: i can get shut down.
i had to talk myself off the ledge of feeling guilty for being sick & missing three days work, for feeling as though i was inconveniencing my boss & boyfriend & just let myself be sick because guess what? it happens to the best of us.
i needed this reminder. i can’t go 100 miles per hour & pull myself in a thousand different directions & not expect to get knocked down sometimes. the key is to be present. listen to what your body & inner (sometimes silent) voice is telling you. i can’t help being sick sometimes but i can make healthy decisions to make it happen less frequently. i’d like to thank flu 2014 for kicking me in the ass & reminding myself who is boss - me!
it’s okay to be busy, to fill your days with things that make you happy & i am fortunate enough to do so on the regular but it’s important to be smart about it. make choices that sustain & nourish you. be good to yourself. being tired or choosing to do something different isn’t a sign of weakness - it’s a sign of self-awareness.
repeat after me: you are not a robot. you are not a machine. give love to yourself, get love in return. stay healthy, kids - mind, body & soul. (oh - & don’t forget to wash your hands.)
